Zagreb

The country’s capital is the biggest city in Croatia. Through history Zagreb has drawn a lot of influence from Vienna and Budapest, so the city has a certain middle-European pastiche in its architecture, squares, fountains and parks. I suggest exploring the nightlife, taking a walk through Maksimir Park (visit the Zagreb city ZOO while you’re there!) and trying the local delicacies (beers, and ‘gableci’ – heavy-meat meals designed as snacks during work hours). Pula

The region where the town is located, Istra, is a popular tourist destination, and Pula is no exception. People are attracted by natural beauties (beaches, the Adriatic, the pine forests) but Pula offers even more. The main attraction is the ancient Roman amphitheater where the gladiators used to fight to amuse the crowd, dating from 1st century AD. The Arena is well-preserved and even depicted on a Croatian 10 Kuna banknote. The Brijuni National Park, a beautiful archipelago of great ecological value. It is located in the vicinity of the town, so don’t miss it. If you like film, I recommend paying a visit to the annual Pula Film Festival, held in July.

Umag

Located in the western part of the Istrian peninsula, Umag is the center of sports tourism in Croatia, mostly because of the annual ATP Croatia Open (sometimes called Umag Open), a tennis tournament played on clay, held in July. During the tournament the city is brimming with people, events and the clubs and beach bars are full. But Umag offers other sports, such as water skiing, windsurfing, diving, hunting, golf and riding.

Dubrovnik

Probably the number one Croatian destination, it’s a place where the world jet-set spend their vacations; the ancient city walls are the city’s recognizable landmark, but there’s plenty to experience and see. The old town, the nearby islands of Mljet, Lokrun and Korčula, the Copacabana beach and the main street called Stradun should be your first destinations.

Islands

There are more than a thousand islands and islets in the Croatian part of the Adriatic. Croatian culture is tied heavily to them and the sea. So it’s no wonder that the islands are places of clean beaches and old-fashioned stone towns, now adapted to tourist requirements. There is a port or a marina in every little fishing village so the entire coastline is considered a nautical heaven. In fact, the best way to explore the islands is to rent a boat or a yacht in one of the charter agencies (like this one) and set sail yourself!

Zadar

We put Zadar on this list for two reasons: first, it is a hot spot of Dalmatia since the city has everything an ordinary tourist wants when visiting Croatia (the beaches, the sea, nightlife and a little bit of history and culture) and second, its location makes it a great base for exploring the rest of Dalmatia: the National Parks of Kornati, Northern Velebit and Krka are nearby, so is the Telascica Nature Park and the Zadar archipelago is considered to be the most beautiful in the Adriatic. Slavonia

Although often overlooked by tourists, since the coastal areas are far more famous, the Croatia’s easternmost regions is a place of exquisite cuisine, historical landmarks and ethno-tradition. The biggest city in the region is Osijek, although the real attractions lie in the Slavonian villages; folklore costumes and music, meat delicacies such as ‘cvarci’ or ‘kobasice’ (sausages) and endless fields of wheat and corn.
